In the early 1940s, the Claretians were looking to expand their missionary efforts to Latino populations on the East coast. They became aware of an influx of immigrants from Puerto Rico and South American countries to New Jersey. In 1947, upon invitation of Bishop George Ahr of Trenton, the Claretians established Immaculate Heart of Mary Mission House in Perth Amboy, a New Jersey suburb of New York City. Immaculate Heart of Mary Mission House grew to become Our Lady of Fatima Church and the missions, such as La Asunción, were also elevated to parishes under the guidance of the Claretians.
